Evergreen Montessori School Reviews

Having read many good things about Evergreen we decided to try it out for our child. Unfortunately what you see is not necessarily what you get. Upon having spent time in the lower elementary class we found the teachers to be inattentive to the children's needs and in fact were somewhat neglectful. We were led to believe that the school focused on children's strengths. This was definitely untrue as the teachers in the lower elementary grades seemed to buy into a deficit model of learning. Even worse, they talked openly about children's 'deficits' in front of the children.

Evergreen offers the small class sizes and a focus on learning to learn that we felt was a good fit for our child and the right way to begin an education. His pace of learning has been excellent and the freedom he gets to structure his day's lessons instills, we think, the idea that he is at school to explore and learn what it is that grips his interest. There is plenty of attention to the necessary basic skills - it's just that here those skills are taught as a means to an end rather than as the endpoint by themselves.

My daughter loves Evergreen and so do I. She is currently in the Primary program and has had an amazing amount of growth. Her development is being nurtured and in a way that works for her. Evergreen does an excellent job in following the Montessori Philosophy and has great parent involvement and a highly dedicated staff. I wouldn't have her any where else!

We wanted a Montessori education for our daughters, and had spent a year in two other area schools before finding Evergreen. The difference was amazing. Evergreen is an incredibly caring place and the academic program is strong in both the primary and the elementary classes. Within the first year, we saw a dramatic improvement in our younger daughter, academically and socially. The after school program has improved greatly over the last year and now includes activities like yoga, field trips, and science projects. The teachers really care about the students, and it shows.

We switched our 3 year old son here mid-year after starting him at a traditional nursery school, which was a disaster. Evergreen has an open, friendly, relaxed, flexible atmosphere -- it is not rule-bound. There is no bureaucracy. The teachers are experienced Montessori teachers and incredible people -- they appreciate each child's strengths and encourage students to understand one another's strengths. My son's learning and imagination is growing by leaps and bounds and it is delightful to watch.

Our daughter has been in Evergreen for four years and both she and our family have thrived as a result. We looked at many schools and this was the one with the environment that appeared to be the most nurturing.

My four-and-a-half year old daughter has been at evergreen since she turned 3 (in their 'primary' program) -- she has thrived there with respect to language, socialization, and maturity. I think they are working a little on their art-related programs, but it is a very cozy, caring community with a keen eye on intellectual and academic growth. We would like to see a stronger language program and the after school program is good, but doesn't have as much emphasis on activity as it might (they are very creative). Overall, we have been very pleased with the school, have 100% confidence in their ability to keep our child safe and to know what our child is doing. Because it is a smaller school, the parent liaison really knows our kids well and we are able to keep in close contact with her. The school also offers some scholarships, which is rare.

My oldest daughter has been going to Evergreen for three years and my youngest just started and they both love it! The teacher/student ratio is about 1:7, the teachers geniunely care about the students and helping them achieve their academic potential, and I have never seen a happier bunch of students in my life! Parents and administrators are so involved that we are like one big family. The school also offers extracurricular activies like karate, basketball, and music, and they also offer a day camp in the summer. Before and after school care is also available. I highly recommend this wonderful, diverse, challenging school!

My son started at this school at age 3. It was an excellent nurturing environment for his to learn. By the time he was age 5, he was reading and telling me about constellations. The teachers and students and community is a wonderful learning experience!
